Des chercheurs ont découvert au fond d’un lac de Californie, une nouvelle forme de vie : une bactérie qui est capable de se développer à partir de l’arsenic.Cette bactérie est non seulement capable de survivre à ce violent poison naturel, mais elle en incorpore également des éléments dans son propre ADN, selon les travaux financés par la Nasa. Une découverte qui redéfinit ce que la science considère comme les éléments de base nécessaires au développement de la vie : le carbone, l’hydrogène, l’azote, l’oxygène, le phosphore et le soufre.Felisa Wolfe-Simon, chercheuse en astrobiologie à l’Institut de géophysique américain, Ariel Anbar, de l’Université de l’Arizona et Paul Davies, un autre scientifique, avaient déjà publié en 2009 des travaux émettant l’hypothèse que l’arsenic puisse se substituer au phosphore dans des formes précoces de vie sur Terre.Felisa Wolfe-Simon a donc voulu expérimenter cette théorie au Lac Mono, en Californie. Pourquoi cet endroit en particulier ? Simplement parce qu’il présente des taux élevés d’arsenic. La chercheuse a donc prélevé des sédiments, pour ensuite les mettre dans une bouteille contenant essentiellement de l’arsenic et très peu de phosphore.La bactérie, appelée GFAJ-1, a survécu. Ariel Anbar a expliqué que cette bactérie était déjà connue. Cependant personne ne soupçonnait qu’elle était capable de se comporter de cette manière. En utilisant l’arsenic comme un bloc de construction, cette bactérie est une exception sur Terre.Si la découverte d’une vie extra-terrestre est loin d’être à l’ordre du jour, cette découverte pourra avoir un intérêt en médecine. Et surtout, elle jette aujourd’hui les bases d’une nouvelle réflexion sur la vie et la science.
